They're not voting because...

There is no difference between Labour and the Tories. I live in an area where ther is a large Tory majority so there is no point voting Lib Dem. If we had proportional representation then I would vote.

Debra replies: If all the "it's not worth bothering" bothered it COULD change the result.
Imagine if Labour got a majority of seats and and something around 35% of the vote .. where would the moral authority to govern come from on such a low vote. WE have become used to parties "winning" on early 40% of the vote ... would we tolerate such a false majority?

Merrick replies: A referendum on proportional representation was a 1997 Manifesto Pledge of Labour's.
In his memoirs, Paddy Ashdown quotes a conversation with Blair saying, 'Paddy, you can trust me on this'.
When the East European communist countries went democratic, not one chose our system because it is so blatantly unfair.
But Labour's Margaret Beckett says we have to retain it because 'it's the system the British people understand'.
Ah, so we're just too thick to have the systems used everywhere else. Thanks for your contempt, Margaret.
