The MPs you vote for are not the real people running the country: the real governors are the faceless, unelected civil service bureaucrats of Whitehall, Cheltenham, and Scotland Yard. Governments come and go, but they remain. You could see this as a good thing, a moderating factor to limit ideologically-inspired excess by the elected, but it only goes to show how irrelevant the popular vote is.
