Not Apathetic

Tell the world why you're not voting - don't let your silence go unheard

They're not voting because...

I'll be spoiling my ballot paper.I...

I'll be spoiling my ballot paper.
I am a socialist in a constituency without a socialist candidate, so I will be writing 'World Socialism' across it.

Paul replies: I thought this was a site about why we're NOT voting. Spoiling a ballot IS voting. They are counted as part of the turn-out. If 100 people are entitled to vote and 50 do so, the turn-out is 50%. If 10 of the 50 spoil their ballot, the turn-out is still announced as 50%. What's the point in spoiling your ballot paper if it looks like you've participated in the election?

Red Deathy replies: Many people I've argued with consider it to be not voting, although I argue the case you've just put.

So far, though, as I can see, this is a site about not voting for any candidate standing, and I see spoiling as recording a none vote while reserving my right and capacity to vote in future should I so choose.

I'll also add that candidates and agents inspect all spoiult papers on the off chance they can claim a distinguishing mark...

About Not Apathetic

NotApathetic was built so that people who are planning not to vote in the UK General Election on May 5th can tell the world why. We won't try to persuade you that voting is a good or a bad idea - we're just here to record and share your explanations. Whether ideological, practical or other, any reason will do.

A lot of users would like us to mention that if you spoil your ballot paper, it will be counted. So if you want to record a vote for "none of the above", you can.
