Not Apathetic

Tell the world why you're not voting - don't let your silence go unheard

They're not voting because...

Your Vote Means Nothing

The idea that an individual has an effect in a democracy of 60 million people is not only wrong, but outright patronising. How many times have I heard the line 'What if everyone thought the same?'? Well, I am an individual, one person, a single vote, and neither care nor have influence over what other people do. As far as I know the smallest ever margin in an election was that of 12 (in a local bye-election). In other words, nobody's vote has ever made more than a twelfth of a difference.

I have no workable alternative to propose, but that doesn't mean I need to play along with the staggering level of innumeracy displayed by everyone else when it comes to election.

And as for 'those who died for my right to vote' - well, I'm sure it was very nice of them, shame they didn't give their lives for something I actually believe in or want.

Not apathetic, just mathematically realistic!

GHZ replies: They didn't fight and die for this!

People fought and died for our right to vote because there was Fascism and Communism; there were choices between the individual and the society, selfishness and collectivism, the market and Socialism, privatisation and nationalisation; choices between Liberalism and personal freedoms or conservatism and security. They fought and died to allow us to vote for the welfare state and the national health service; then for privatisation, the culling of the unions and the power of the co operations. They fought and died to make sure that when a government lied to it's people and took the country to war against majority opinion, at least that government could be held accountable and voted out in due course.

They didn't fight and die to allow us to vote between a party that will 'make things a bit better' and one that will 'make things a bit better and sterilise all gypsies'.

They fought and died to give us a choice, and now we have no choice.

azad replies: My dear GHZ, you care, hence you post here and I agree with almost all the above, except that we do have a choice, vote the rotten apples out.

About Not Apathetic

NotApathetic was built so that people who are planning not to vote in the UK General Election on May 5th can tell the world why. We won't try to persuade you that voting is a good or a bad idea - we're just here to record and share your explanations. Whether ideological, practical or other, any reason will do.

A lot of users would like us to mention that if you spoil your ballot paper, it will be counted. So if you want to record a vote for "none of the above", you can.
