Not Apathetic

Tell the world why you're not voting - don't let your silence go unheard

They're not voting because...

I am not voting because I have little...

I am not voting because I have little faith in the ability of the political system to process information from the electorate into action. Compared with the economic system, the political system is quite poor at interpreting what people want and how to convert those wishes into the practical means of achieving them. As an example, I would give the recent Jamie Oliver school dinners issue. If the political system cannot deliver something as seemingly sensible and universally popular as nutritious meals for schoolchildren without a celebrity causing a media outcry, it really does seem absurd. I really wonder whether the systems of exchange and feedback of information from electorate to executive are adequate.

What can be done to improve them? Im not sure, but feel that what we have now is a system of window-dressed political paralysis. I would say that the most sensible thing to do would be to vote for a smaller state, but I dont agree with the Tories on other matters, so dont want to vote for them. I realise that whinging and not voting wont exactly help. But if I vote my vote will be taken as a mandate for many things I dont agree with, whoever I vote for.

The Labour party, in their fights with the Lords etc, have always bragged about how they are the democratically-elected chamber, and so have a mandate to do whatever they like, regardless of the manifesto promises that they could legitimately claim to have a mandate for but then break. This seems a very arrogant misinterpretation of the electorates actual level of enthusiasm for their policies.

Screaming Lord Sutch replies: Hear Hear! Well said!

Read my MANICfesto - compulsive reading for someone disillusioned with the current state of politics. And vote the MONSTERS even if just as a satirical comment against today's politics.

About Not Apathetic

NotApathetic was built so that people who are planning not to vote in the UK General Election on May 5th can tell the world why. We won't try to persuade you that voting is a good or a bad idea - we're just here to record and share your explanations. Whether ideological, practical or other, any reason will do.

A lot of users would like us to mention that if you spoil your ballot paper, it will be counted. So if you want to record a vote for "none of the above", you can.
