I'll be spoiling my ballot paper.written 27th Apr 2005
I am a socialist in a constituency without a socialist candidate, so I will be writing 'World Socialism' across it.
Paul replies: I thought this was a site about why we're NOT voting. Spoiling a ballot IS voting. They are counted as part of the turn-out. If 100 people are entitled to vote and 50 do so, the turn-out is 50%. If 10 of the 50 spoil their ballot, the turn-out is still announced as 50%. What's the point in spoiling your ballot paper if it looks like you've participated in the election?written 28th Apr 2005
Red Deathy replies: Many people I've argued with consider it to be not voting, although I argue the case you've just put.
So far, though, as I can see, this is a site about not voting for any candidate standing, and I see spoiling as recording a none vote while reserving my right and capacity to vote in future should I so choose.
I'll also add that candidates and agents inspect all spoiult papers on the off chance they can claim a distinguishing mark...written 28th Apr 2005
